Reiki Energy Healing
Michael is trained as a Reiki Healer under the Usui Reiki method. Reiki is a very specific form of energy healing, in which hands are placed just off the body or lightly touching the body, as in “laying on of hands.” Reiki can also be done “long-distance,” as a form of prayer. According to many versions of its origin, Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese seeker of spiritual truths, brought the Reiki method of healing into human awareness in 1922 after a deep spiritual experience.
In a Reiki session, the practitioner is seeking to transmit Universal Life Energy to the client. The intention is to create deep relaxation, to help speed healing, reduce pain, and decrease other symptoms you may be experiencing.
Storytelling, the oral tradition, is one way people have communicated for most of history. BEC is committed to using the art of storytelling to connect elders and youth. By teaching children to create and tell stories about the vision of the earth in which they would like to live and giving elders the opportunity to provide insight into how they can make this happen, the two groups can work together on solutions. Youth learn valuable communication skills and elders who are home-bound gain socialization time needed to be healthy. One programmatic approach will be our fire-side stories. Elders share their experiences to teach youth life lessons that can be implemented in their own lives.
Story Myth Ritual
The stories we tell ourselves can either be supportive or destructive. Many of these stories start at an early age as a protection or a way of coping. The sooner we can learn to construct positive stories about ourselves, the stronger and healthier we will be in our approach to life.
Program Module Steps or Process: The proposed approach will need to be tailored to each age group, but in general it is as follows:
• Make sure we are out in nature somewhere where it is easy to sit and just take in the surroundings.
• Pen and paper would be handy so that each youth can right down one negative or unsupportive story they tell themselves. We can guide anyone that is struggling to find one and can also advise them that if they can’t come up with one, to tell a positive story about what they want to do… something that is fun to them and can support them as they walk through life (maybe even skip negative story).
• With a positive story, embellish it and add to how others in their friend groups or community would also enjoy this and how they might share it with them. How it benefits others…some way of linking the story to the “myth”…a higher purpose for their positive story.
o Definition of myth: a story or group of stories that form part of the traditional knowledge of a society. Myths often use imaginative plots and characters to explain how the world began and why nature and people behave the way they do. [source]
o The key is to give a deeper meaning to their story so it locks it within at a deeper level and they can share more readily with others. Passion is ignited which improves self-esteem and self-worth.
- Create a ritual that honors the story and myth. Use natural objects available at the nature site to assist. To increase the feel of community, have each youth lead the others in their particular ritual so that the shared experience builds a collaborative spirit and locks the ritual in at a deeper level. Remembering that each youth is different in how they experience the world and some may not be ready to share so come up with an alternative way…maybe just the student and guide participate in the ritual.
